The biggest update to Microsoft Office documents in decades is Microsoft Loop, a hub for a new way of working in Office. Microsoft’s Fluid work, which consists of discrete pieces of collaborative Office content that can be copied, pasted, and shared with others, has a new name: Microsoft Loop.

The three essential elements of Microsoft Loop are Loop components, Loop pages, and Loop workspaces. It is possible for loop components to exist across many apps, to be updated in real-time, and to be accessible by anybody. It may be a list that is shared in a Teams channel and is also editable on a Loop page, or it can be noted in a calendar item that can be imported into Outlook and modified in context within an email.

These components are also included in what Microsoft refers to as shared Loop workspaces, which are located within the main Loop hub. In that it displays a list of all Loop components and Loop pages, along with who is currently working on them; it is comparable to a project board. Think of it as a modern File Explorer where everything is collaborative and live.

It is possible to exchange and work together on Loop components on distinct canvases known as Loop pages. It’s similar to a current whiteboard, but significantly more sophisticated because you can input and exchange components made outside of Loop. Individual components of the Loop page might be modified in real-time from different applications, so not everyone needs to be a member of the complete page.

Microsoft has been working on these collaborative Loop components for some years, and it’s evident that the corporation has been modifying how Loop functions to match the reality of pandemic life. A central Microsoft Loop center appears to be a better method to manage and organize various components — and an obvious answer to the new hybrid work period to which many firms are adapting, as well as rivals like Notion.

So far, Microsoft’s Loop component demonstrations have been stunning, but we’ll need to see them for ourselves to properly grasp whether Loop can genuinely offer the seamless experience that Microsoft is promising. With many features similar to Loop, Notion has been threatening Microsoft’s traditional Office style of working, and Microsoft’s solution appears to be a more powerful version of Notion.

While Microsoft has been discussing Loop (Fluid) for over 18 months, it is still not available in Office programs. Microsoft Loop components will be available this month in Teams, Outlook, and OneNote. They will have the entire Microsoft Loop app to follow later. “In the coming months, we will share additional information regarding the availability of the Microsoft Loop app,” says Wangui McKelvey, general manager of Microsoft 365.
